On-Call Clean-Up

The City of Alameda will host an electronic waste (E-waste) drop-off event for the collection of unwanted E-waste on Saturday, September 27, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held near 51 West Trident at Alameda Point, close to the east entrance at Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway and Main Street.

Drivers will enter a parking lot bordered by Orion and West Seaplane Lagoon. A valid driver's license or a recent Alameda Power & Telecom bill is required to participate in the drop-off event, which is open to both Alameda residents and businesses. The collection day is a no-cost opportunity to discard unwanted items in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

Sponsored by ARPD and e-Recycling of California

The event is sponsored in conjunction with the Alameda Recreation & Park Department and e-Recycling of California. Appropriate items for collection include: computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, phones, cellular phones, VCRs, and televisions.

Recycling E-waste protects the Planet

E-waste products that reach the end of their useful lives or become obsolete often contain enough hazardous substances, such as lead, to be considered hazardous waste. For example, a computer monitor contains two to five pounds of lead, and a television contains four to seven pounds of lead. These amounts are well above the toxic threshold for soluble lead, and items containing them can be hazardous to the environment if not disposed of properly. Recycling E-waste is the better alternative, as it saves resources and protects the planet.

What is Not E-waste

The following items will not be accepted: console televisions, microwaves, blenders, vacuums, refrigerators, freezers, washers, and air conditioners. Household hazardous waste, such as motor oil, pesticides, paint, batteries, and similar items, also will not be accepted. (More on Household hazardous waste)
