Coastal Cleanup 2009 Recap

Dear Alamedans,

Coastal Cleanup

On behalf of the Public Works Department, I would like to thank the 510 volunteers who participated in the 25th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach. An impressive 1,314 pounds of litter were removed from our coastline: plastic bags, bits of Styrofoam™, straws, bottle caps, cigarette filters and a myriad of other items that would otherwise endanger the abundant marine life of the San Francisco Bay.

Litter that is tossed out of a car window often makes its way to a storm drain or catch basin along our city streets, and unfortunately washes straight out to the Bay. This debris, which often looks like food to marine life, is very harmful if consumed, so it is essential that all of us take care to ensure the streets of our island are litter-free.

The success of this local Coastal Clean Up Day was also due to the participation and coordination of the Recreation and Parks Department, the East Bay Regional Park District, Alameda County Industries, the California Coastal Commission, and the Public Works Department. A special thanks to Alameda Towne Centre and its merchants for treating Coastal Cleanup volunteers to a family-focused celebration immediately following the event.

Thanks to all volunteers and cooperating agencies for putting on a fun and effective event. I am proud to be part of the Alameda community and look forward to seeing you this year, September 25, 2010, for the 26th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day event.

Sincerely,

Matthew T. Naclerio
Public Works Director
